About

Putting people first, always.

Harriet Birt is currently splitting her time as the Brand and Digital Design Lead at Avon Fire & Rescue Service in the UK  + User Centred Design consultant.

A strategic, big picture thinker, an accomplished Designer with 16 years’ experience in the private and public sector. With a background in design, and interest in psychology, understanding why people do what they do is the real motivator. It allows designing better experiences for people for physical and digital environments.

Harriet  believes that user centred design is integral to any service led organisation, the catalyst for improving the experience people have, essentially simplifying processes, but also helping understand inevitable complexity.

Also dyslexic, so this helps to think differently, it also really drives Harriet to make services inclusive and accessible to all.

Harriet has worked in a mixture of large and small organisations. Being in small teams has enabled Harriet to be hands on with variety of projects that have required a lot of overlap within user-centred roles such as user research, UX, CX, UI, IA, usability testing, knollege in accessibility standards, product management and working knowledge of frontend development languages such as HTML and CSS allowing Harriet to communicate effectively with developers. But fundamentally, service design is what pins most of the above together, and that has led Harriet to work more at a strategic level within her current role

Experience to date has enabled Harriet to lead teams in optimising the most suitable outcomes for customers, the public and in house teams, working specifically with social enterprises, charities, and public sector bodies that do good and serve a positive purpose.

Working within the agile methodology and the Double Diamond framework, Harriet’s decisions are always led by KPI’s, quantitative and qualitative data, creativity and, most importantly the people using the service or product. Quick in identifying pain points or bottlenecks and have a really keen eye for the detail within a fast-paced environment.

“We have worked with Harriet on many projects and can’t recommend her enough. She gets the brand and the environment we operate in meaning her designs are always beautiful and engaging but practical. We look forward to our work together in the future!”

“Harriet has been instrumental to the ongoing growth and development of HomeLets, not least by enabling the delivery of our brand fresh project. Any business setting out to freshen up their image is usually in for a lot of work and some tricky decisions about how they want to look and feel going forward. To this end, Harriet has really helped us evolve our vision. Easy to work with and with great ideas, we can see no reason why Harriet wouldn’t add value to any design/creative project.”

“The work Harriet produced for our Manifesto has really resonated with, and inspired everyone who’s seen it. Engaging and original, Harriet’s illustrations are playing a vital role in helping us promote our manifesto effectively by capturing our vision so beautifully.”
